The Straight Razor Shave Lecture with Donnie Hawley

Just had a straight razor shave, I hardly use the single bladed Gilettes be-cause
anymore. I love practice on my skill, use the straight razor and probably also the trill of the shave.

I made jokes a while ago when about three bladed razors and how they will go up until 10-20 so you can shave your face with one stroke, we have reached the 5 blade nonsense not too far away anymore.

Watch this barber and see how easy it is!

Jeans of the Old West: A History

Thanks to Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin and the great images of Farhard Samari who lead me to this great book about Jeans/Denim. It is a great resource to finally fill some gaps I got about this subject. The Author Michael Allen Harris basically diggs for stuff and jeans left by miners around mines since years. Most of them are still in great shape after 150 years. Thanks to the dry climate in the desert we can get knowledge about the style, details and the denim at those days. The images in his book and the knowlege is absolutely unique.

Images in the Süddeutsche Magazin are taken by Farhard, and a some of them are shown in the blog of his friend Bandit Photographer – Cory Piehowicz.

Just found a video about Harris taken by Cory Piehowicz at Cory´s Website.

About 10 month ago I swapped my job in font, behind and inside computers against building boats. It took a while to figure out what kind of cloth and stuff will work well for me. They have to be tough, some style and shouldn´t make me cry if they are ruined.

Most important are the boots, a pair of Thorogood Moc toe boots proofed to be worth to call a workboot.
They are :
comfortable
white sole does not leave traces on boats
are a bit protective
the leather can be cleaned of most ugly stuff with aceton
were goodamn cheap – 50 Euros for them
(I´m sorry, no Red Wing´s boots here, but as soon as I do not find a sponsor I will keep them for working)

Trousers, at the beginning I had a well made paar of workwear trousers, but I could not stand the plastic content all day. I swapped to jeans, be-cause that what they are ment to. I usually buy them at ebay for less then 10 bucks and toss them away when they are ruined by synthetic rasin, hardener, paint or aceton. My favorite one so far the the Carhartt double knee pant. It got reenforced knees, and has a quite comfortable cut.

Watch, my heuer chrono proofed to be taking some hits and works still. Somehow it hurts me to see it aging but on the other hand I can not imagine another one, and for sure no digital Casio.

Belt, I was able to grab some deadstock swedish army belts a couple of months ago. One I kept for myself and it is a joy to watch him aging.

Ipod shuffle, sometimes when working hard with all day sanding stuff and no way to hear the radio or a word. You will love some other sound. If you wonder about the note on it. Just a test how restrictive Apple is with their engraving service.

Any advice or sponsorship is welcome, If you want to sacrify a pair of jeans or boots contact me. I will feature its use/destruction frequently.

Hiking in the Moostal area

Hiking in the Moostal area:
Going hiking at about 30 C – some close people called me “your are crazy”. Luckily Maria and some friends felt forced to join be-cause it was said to do so. After buying some great lunch at the market we started late to not catch the full heat on the 20km walk. Unluckily we arrived too late at the Darmstädter Hütte – the kitchen was closed already but we got some pasta. After some cold beer – which we all earned and some red wine we had an easy sleep. On sunday we started quite early to pass the snow covered Kuchenjoch and to hike trough the Konstanzer Hütte and back to St. Anton. At the Konstanzer Hütte there was a small 1st. of July party with some folk musik, beer and barbecue. A great weekend!
