Yesterday I decided to try some Otter Wax to treat my brand new Rising Sun Outdoor Vest in Raw Brown Duck Canvas. It took me about half an hour and 1/3 of this XL bar of Otter Wax. I strongly recommend to watch the Otter Wax Video on Vimeo for some hints. Working the wax into the fabric with your fingers is the way to do it right. There is the option to treat the fresh waxed fabric with a blow dryer for a deeper saturation and a more even distribution. The wax gets more fluid then, but I liked the contrast of some hard to reach areas (see the image 2)and also the not too perfect applied look.
At the beginning of the treatment the wax is a bit sticky but this has changed already within the last 10 hours. As mentioned in the Video by Otter Wax it is settling in for up to 3 days. I hope the development and difference between the two vests is clear. To describe the waxed one, I would say it looks a bit like some “well broken in greasy suede leather vest”. I´m sure this vest will develop a nice character within the next month – stay updated here.
Otter Wax Europe Distribution: We are happy to hear that Otter Wax Products will soon be available via Europe. Kami Hashemi takes care of the Distribution of their products now. We have companies like Barbour and Fjällräven who offer waterproofing products for your canvas stuff but Otter Wax fills the gap – why?
- First of all, its 100% natural, no silicone, no petroleum, non toxic. e.g. Barbour makes no reference about the contents of their Wax Thornproof Dressing. - The Otter Wax bar is usable on the fly just apply as much wax on the areas you wish to make waterproof. No preheating of a tin, and no mess around with the oily fluid.
As you can see below, Otter Wax enhanced their portfolio a lot recently by some leather care and personal care products:
Hmm some Otter Wax products had a nice pine tree smell but I do not clearly remember if the Otter wax bar was that as well. I´ll let you know when I´ve made my test on the recently acquired Barbour Jackets or my old Carhartt jacket. TIP! – get yourself a vintage Barbour Bedale,Beaufort or Border now, not when it turns colder, the prices are low right now. Who thinks about bad weather protection right now? I Just got a used Barbour Beaufort for 3,50 Euro excl. shipping.
Otter Wax, waterproof your fabric: Thanks to Frederic for bringing my attention to Otter Wax.Waxing natural fibres to make them waterproof is not a total new invention, more a forgotten practise. Probably the only company who still does it until now on a large scale is Barbour. But actually you can waterproof your shoes, backpack, jeans or jacket with a bar of Otter Wax quite easily.
