Cabin time with friends – Grabs – Austria:
Last weekend like the last 3 years we rented the local DAV (Deutscher Alpenverein / German Alpine Club) cabin with some friends and had a great weekend with backcountry alpine skiing, hiking and skiing. Of course some great food, wine and schnaps was also playing a role. Due to the schnaps and quite a hangover I was not too motivated to take photos on Saturday morning, sorry for that. But after 1 1/2 hours of walking uphill with the skis all systems were nearly working as normal. Great to be with friends up in the mountains and great to have clubs like the DAV who let you rent their huts/cabins for a reasonable price.

swiss army backpack salt and pepper small vs. big

Swiss army backpack salt and pepper small vs. big or light vs. heavy:
As promised I took some images of the smaller or lighter Swiss army salt and pepper backpack from 1963 made by A. Mosimann. As you can see it lacks the stronger and reinforced carrying system and the closing flap with the leather buckles. This makes it about 2 kg lighter and a lot slimmer when not filled. The materials have the same strength and the reinforcements of the stitches are pretty much the same. Absolute superb craftsmanship I have to say, not one single weakness I could find on the construction of the backpack. All buckles or leather parts have got reinforcements on the other side of the canvas. The canvas itself is very strong but does not tend to break. I guess if you treat it with some wax it will be waterproof like a barbour jacket.
Speaking of the comfort I have to admit the bigger and heavier rucksack feels a bit more comfortable esp. when you plan to carry a lot of weight. But at the same also quite heavy and bulky even when empty. The closing method of the lighter one is quite strange at the beginning but quick to access and if you fold it it should be keep most rain away. So I would say a quite clever design. So if you need a stylish vintage backpack with rugged leather I would say there is no better one on this planet for around 30 Euro / 40 USD. Grab one as long as they are available.

ski touring in the bregenzer wald – austria

Ski touring in the Leckner Tal, Bregenzer Wald – Austria:
Yesterday Maria and me had to go for some ski touring be – cause the weather conditions looked perfect and 2 days ago we had snow in the higher regions. So we grabbed our dusted ski touring equipment and gave it a go. From Lindau about 40 minutes to drive and you are right in the Bregenzerwald and in the Lecknertal. The ascend to the summit was about 2 hours, a quick tour but right to check the stuff and make adjustments for the next time. Check my skins on the ski´s and you know that there is wax missing on the skins, you do not want to drag all the sticky snow up the hill. No problem on a quick tour but a already a pain in the ass. The panorama at the summit was great, the sight was ok not to clear. You might remember this place from the end of summer post.
Vintage Ski Race Cup Fischen 2012 – Allgäu

Vintage Ski Race Cup Fischen 2012 – Allgäu:
Yesterday we were on an antique, classic, retro, vintage or heritage (whatever) ski team race cup in Fischen close to Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region. Each team consisted out of 4 athletes. A nice atmosphere, a lot of fun and great cloth and equipment. They raced down in a group of 4 and the time was stopped when all of them reached the finish line. Just close to the start the competitors had a stop to have an energy drink – Schnaps. With only wooden skis some sportsman and sportswoman showed great skills. It was a relaxing event with kids, families, clubs and workmates competing against each other in a funny way. We definitely will have a look again next year.

Blair witch rodeln

Blair witch rodeln:
Just came back from rodeln (slaying – “toboganing”) with Stefan. Weather conditions were perfect, lots of snow – we had to go. With some Petzl led-headlights you can easily go for a hike in the darkness. After 45 minutes we reached the mountain restaurant “Dole” had some drinks and french fries. On the way up and down we had a lots of wind and fog, quite nice atmosphere. Worst visibility was around 8 m best right down to Bregenz from the Pfänder about a 1 km.
Fjällräven Numbers collection promotion video
Interesting approach. I love Fjällräven, this brand and G1000 is unbeatable. I guess I have to take some images of my over 10 year old hiking trousers. They are still fine and have still some life for more hikes in them.

Infos about the Fjällräven Anorak No. 8, I really like the high colar.

I / we walked the line – cross country skiing

Cross country skiing in Scheidegg / Hagspiel, the Allgäu region:
This weekend we rented cross country skies and did something totally irresponsible. We just took the stuff and went to a cross country run, no instruction, no certificate, we just went. And we came back safe. Yes it´s possible.
The activity itself is probably for people 50++ but it´s great fun. Some pro´s on the run/tack have their skies and there equipment and cloth since decades so be aware to se lots or unique retro pieces.
The if you do not start skating and only go traditionally the activity is quite easy. I would rate it between walking and running. The only danger is when you go downhill and the race/track is suddenly gone. The feeling trying to get some grip or control over these small skis is comparable to Bambi´s fist steps after birth.
Overall very relaxing, no ski lifts, no traffic jam and the driving time is only 20 minutes. Away from the lake and a bit up in the backcountry.
