Autumn hiking and bivouac – Trangia stove

We probably caught one of the last weekends for our bivouac in the alps. Probably a week to late, the yellow leaves already dropped down. After about close to 3 hours we reached the summit and our campground. On the way up there I spotted a badly wounded tree which blood/resin I took as a fire starter. Two years ago I collected some wood and leaned it to a tree, it was still there so the fire was started really quick. We barbecued some Frankfurter/Kraken and had a good bottle of red wine.

The night was very mild for end of october but quite windy. Tillmann had his sheep skin and thick felt army blanket which were sufficient for the night. Sunrise was great and a task on this trip was to review the abilities of the Trangia alcohol stove with non conform add ons.

First task was to get good coffee, with the Bialetti espresso maker he worked just great.

Second task was to heat up the De Buyer fried egg pan which worked perfect as well.

Unintentionally the Trangia frying pan served as a water cup for Tillmann and the 2 pots for collecting blueberries.

It was a great trip, perfect weather and very comfortable. The Trangia stove added very much to its comfort. The Trangia cooking system is a absolute fool proof compact way to dine outdoors. Alcohol is widely available to run it and has the huge plus that its smell is way better when spilling some of the content than petroleum, diesel or gasoline. Gas cartridges I somehow dislike since they are always a big hassle to get, produce a lot of litter and can not used up all the way. (and are pricy)

If you wonder why this images look somehow familiar to you check a post about this spot two years ago. (it was more than 2 weeks earlier, thats why the leafs look much nicer)

I just spent one day in the Alps and discovered another great hiking area with possible winter hike possibilities. The area around the Kaltenbergerhütte is not just surrounded by a great panoramic scenery but also the area to run free for easy more than 100 Haflinger horses.

This is one of the standart hikes we do when weather is bad or the snow is still trapped in the mountains. Not too high in altitude but in a nice surrounding – scenery. At the end of the valley there is the village Schönenbach which is only inhabited in summertime. Famous for their milk and cheese we do not fail to restock some local made stuff there.

Fascinated by the display of a “cigarette box people” by Helmut King about 8 years ago, since then this artist was always around. Either on the WM 2006 in the streets of Bregenz, in art restaurants and bars or on his exhibitions. Last year I met him and got a signed copy of his “cigarette box people” book and yesterday I more accidentally was told that I could join a private visit to his atelier. He showed us his amazing range of art he created within the last decades and to the end he juggled for Paul. Thanks for your time and inspiration. (c) by Helmut King

Recently we were on a saturday and around lunchtime in Bregenz – Austria. Sure lunch could not be delayed. Luckily we walked by Alan´s Nudelwerkstatt. There we had some superb fresh made ravioli with sage and dried tomatoes.

Alan Cohen from New York manufactures in Bregenz with two Italian pasta machines, filled and plain pasta. A quite and unique place with lots of character as the owner itself. Up to 8 persons can be hosted on 4 tables. His pasta is accompanied by a fine selection of Italian wines, olive oil, Cantuccini, Panettone and his home made Pesto.

How you can find him?

Rehmen to Liegstein hiking in Vorarlberg Austria:
Yesterday we did a hike from Rehmen – Au to the Liegstein (1596m). The architecture of the Bregenzer Wald region is just amazing we walked by more than a dozen mountain huts we would like to life in.  The Liegstein, a cliff/drop of about at least 300m was the highlight of the hike (basejump?). It took us while to get closer to the edge and to look down. The snow from last week, the surrounding panorama of the nearby mountains and still a bit of a autumn vibe were quite enjoyable.

Hiking – Schröcken, Biberacherhütte:
After a feast with friends on some excellent roasted ducks at Gasthof Traube plus dessert it was a must to vaporize the calories the other day. One hour from home, after Schoppernauwe went straight to the Biberacher Hütte and continued the path in a superb mountain panorama to SchröckenUnfortunately no cake since off season has already started. The weather was outstanding, no autumn at all.

Can someone identify the jawbone i found? Teeth are sharp as it is from a carnivore but no fangs?
