Last weekend we went to the Sarotlahütte in Austria, a perfekt spot for stay for a night and to do further hikes in this area. Snow came early this year and the hut was closed, as most huts at high altitude do. We enjoyed the warm sun the stunning panorama and of corse our “Brotzeit” / picknick up there.
From saturday till sunday we went to a hike to a 2395m high alpine hut which was on my absolute to see list since years. Bad weather or snow and bad maps were the reason I did not made it there yet. After a steady 5-6 hours wandering uphill we made it to the already warmed up cabin. 2 hiking couples moved already in and they even made too much pasta. We were generous enough to help them to recycle this well made dinner. In exchange we did the washing and I shared my last drops of Flor de Cana Rum with them.
This was also the first time I was just in time to feast on blueberries, they were always too green or too ripe. The mountains and the landscape in this area is great as well. On the way we passed some really rustic cabins for shelter and as hunting base as well.
I definitely have to head back there before winter comes for one or two nights.
I just spent one day in the Alps and discovered another great hiking area with possible winter hike possibilities. The area around the Kaltenbergerhütte is not just surrounded by a great panoramic scenery but also the area to run free for easy more than 100 Haflinger horses.
Rehmen to Liegstein hiking in Vorarlberg Austria: Yesterday we did a hike fromRehmen – Au to the Liegstein (1596m). The architecture of the Bregenzer Wald region is just amazing we walked by more than a dozen mountain huts we would like to life in. The Liegstein, a cliff/drop of about at least 300m was the highlight of the hike (basejump?). It took us while to get closer to the edge and to look down. The snow from last week, the surrounding panorama of the nearby mountains and still a bit of a autumn vibe were quite enjoyable.
Hiking – Schröcken, Biberacherhütte: After a feast with friends on some excellent roasted ducks at Gasthof Traube plus dessert it was a must to vaporize the calories the other day. One hour from home, after Schoppernau, we went straight to the Biberacher Hütteand continued the path in a superb mountain panorama to Schröcken. Unfortunately no cake since off season has already started. The weather was outstanding, no autumn at all.
Can someone identify the jawbone i found? Teeth are sharp as it is from a carnivore but no fangs?
Valle Maira – Maira Valley hiking: We just came back from hiking in the Maira Valley / Valle Maira a forgotten jewel and rediscovered luckily. It´s often revered as the a black spot in Europe be-cause of only 2 inhabitants per km2 but it is recovering from that status. Before and after the WWII the area was more and more abandoned and houses and land were left behind. The Schneiders a german couple found this jewel around 1980 and with the help of some extraordinary personalities from the valley they founded the Percorsio Occitani aconnection of treks and posto tappas (shelter and some of best food + wine on this planet).
We met great people there, had a glimpse into a forgotten culture had great food and wine and will for sure continue this amazing experience within the next years. The combination of extraordinary trekking, culture and good food (wine) is just too unique!
