Pinguin Books luminous billboard: Yesterday night I found this great billboard in front of a bookshop. It closed down and they gave it away for free. Since we were on the way to a concert, I could not take this 80 cm x 80 cm piece with me, so I hide it. I was quite happy to find it still there when we came back and the best the lights inside still work.
Ernest Shackelton – Endurance expedition 1914 – 1917: If you never heard about this dude and his crew, take the time to watch this great story about true men.
Amazing we are all just – pussy’s. If you do not want to watch all 11/11 videos, read at least the Wikipedia article about Shackeltonarticle. The real tragedy I heard was not how and that all of his men survived the hardship of this 3 years expedition. It´s that all his men died in WWI after they made it back home.
The add in the London Times for hiring his crew got quite famous: “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.” 5000 men applied only a view were taken!
Vintage German matchsticks – Zündhölzer:
Found this cool matches / matchsticks today. Must be at least 20 – 30 years old. Full of smart ass phrases, like
“hast du zündhölzer – hast du feuer!”
– you got matches – you got fire!
“wer immer stets vergleiche zieht – im fachgeschäft den vorteil sieht”
– who constantly compares sees the advantages of buying in a specialist store
“der kluge kopf kauft nur im fachgeschäft”
– the smart head buys only in a specialty store.
The phases could not be more relevant than they are today. I guess at the time these matchsticks were produced – Internet was still far away and supermarkets outlet stores and malls were as well not too omnipresent.
Would love to see these matches soon in one of the shops featured on the right side of my website.
