BE-CAUSE belts, dog leads and more handmade stuff

I keep on practicing on my leather craft skills and I found a very good source for solid brass hardware for buckles and  bolt snaps or the famous Tiger Thread or copper rivets. Seams look now more aligned than two weeks ago and techniques on cutting leather improved also a lot.
See images of belts, dog leads or some new IPhone5 covers I did lately.

Tellason Clampdown Denim Shirt

Somehow it seems that taking a new Tellason piece with me on vacation turns into a habit. While the images of the Tellason Ankara on the coast of Liguria at the end of Summer 2012 were somehow cheerful and sunny, the weather and the hills in Piedmont now were mostly nebulous (thats what the famous Nebbiolo (Barolo) grapes got their name from).

The weather fitted the planned use for the Tellason Clampdown 10.5 oz Denim shirt too well. While I would rate the Tellason Topper 7,5 oz Denim shirt as the perfect warm/all weather shirt, the Clampdown fills the gap when the temperature drops. Hardwearing denim, double and even triple seams, solid buttons and front pockets. As an upgrade to the topper shirt the clampdown got additional to the pen holder in the breast pocket an additional a knife holder. If you already own a Tellason Jean you might not having trouble to carry your knife in one of the spacious pockets but If you own a really nice knife – now you got the chance to show it.

The idea to craft a dog collar for Tillmann with my mobile number on it was born be-cause he kept loosing the “id bombs” or making writings on the inside disappear caused by his rugged lifestyle. And the reason for an ID was also necessary by the fact that the call of nature and smells made him disappear from time to time. Once the “Jagdtrieb” / “hunting instincts” get hold of him it´s unlikely that he realize a command.

So within a very short period I was asked by friends to handmade at least half a dozen dog collars, with names on them and sometimes for the more active dogs with a phone number to call. Just make sure the dog collar does not outperform your own belt by quality and style.

The Heritage Post No. 7 October 2013

Actually my plan was to walk over to our carpenter to pick up a device who helps us to burnishing leather belts but I found The Heritage Post on the steps. My name and address written nicely and skilled in ink and the Heritage Post stamp onto it (and a nice post stamp as well). A joy to receive post like this. The cover was released some days ago so I wasn´t that surprised but the preface is excellent as usual. The further content will be absorbed after this post is published.

Here just some quick and dirty images I shoot, it will give you an impression about the content but does not tell too much. Get a copy by yourself!

Since the locking mechanism of my Zeno watch tend to open sometimes or a lot of times, the decision of getting a replacement was on the list. After seeing the DIY guide by Wood&Faulk on sewing a Nato style watch strap I decided to give it a try.  Ok, I give posting a about leather a break now.

DIY hand sewn IPhone 5 leather sheath

Inspired by some great leather crafters I decided to give leather a try. Leather is such a great material in so many variations. I started to get stitches straight with a normal round awl just to find out, or better be told by Simon and Uwe that this is bullshit. Switching to the diamond shaped awl brings in another task to align the blade right. I made some progress but actually it really helped me to improve my judgement about good quality leather crafts and crap. If you actually make the experience how hard it is to master “simple looking” tasks you evaluate products differently.

My first project was to sew a dog collar for my dog, he is not too picky about stuff and a very good tester for durability. The seams hold really well so far! Then I continued to work on buckles and belts and now I did a couple of IPhone Sheaths / covers. Above you see the last one, getting better but still not in any way close to be too proud of.

I don´t own a smartphone but you can get dummies for a mold for less then 10 bucks. It´s tricky to create and to dimension the template, esp. when the leather is a thick one. Probably the most challenging thing are the curves and corners and to cut them out evenly. However you learn by your mistakes and messy results, and the goal is to develop skill by what you do. Punching holes and sewing can be meditative in some way and its nice to see something developing and done with your own hands.

Through a hint by a follower I came across this furniture designer / carpenter. A great and probably a very comfortable chair to grab a good book and chill. Check also the other products Phloem Studio crafts.
