As a regular reader you might know I use the Whiley Pop Popcorn Maker to roast my coffee. But I actually never roasted coffee beans in a pan before today. It is possible but I have to tell you that a lot of movement is involved shaking the iron or iron cast pan every 5 seconds for about 20 minutes. So you will earn you breakfast after it for sure.

So this is how I did it:
– Use a proper pan, iron or iron cast is perfect. One with a higher rim is absolute perfect.
– Fill it with geen coffee beans just a bit less than all the ground is covered. They will expand to about double the size.
– The most tricky part is how to know the right temperature of you oven plate. I would start with 2/3 of the maximum. E.g. I got 9 max. so I choose 6 or 7.
– Too hot will burn the beans to fast. You sould be able to roast the beans for more than 20 minutes until they are dark brown.
– Constantly shake the pan with the cover and make sure they are evenly covering the whole surface of the pan.
– Avoid dark spots by not moving the beans around, about max. 5 seconds is ok.
– After 10 minutes you should hear the first cracks of the beans
– Ater 20 minutes you should hear the second cracks, this about the time when the beans
are close to be ready.
– Wait for the beans to be a darkish brown close to black for espresso, dark brown for regular coffee.
– Fill the roasted beans in a huge bowl and shake off the skins of the beans, your coffee will taste bitter if you leave them with the beans.
– Cool them down and fill them in a jar.
– Keep the cover from the jar open for about a day so the beans can breath out the carbon monoxide
– After about 24hours the coffee is ready to be grinded and ready to drink.

The cheapest, one of the most tasting and most joyful method to make coffee is using the typical Bialetti Espresso maker. A 3 or 4 cup sized Bialetti is the perfect choice for a breakfast for two. Not too much attention is needed, the smell of fresh made coffee is distributed wonderfully through the whole apartment and the end is announced by a nice bubbling sound of the espresso maker.

Red Wing leather work gloves:
I´ve been yesterday for a quick visit to Munich and as most of the time visited Burghard Pflug´s Gasoline Alley. Hard to leave his shop without finding something. This time I got a pair of Red Wing leather work gloves. With the right jacket or trousers a man hardly needs gloves but sometimes I wished I had one. So they had to be constructed well and this pair fitted my requirements as I can say now.
– Thick cowhide leather
– Reinforced patch on palm and thumb
– A leather which will develop nicely by it´s use in time

Stanley Thermos:
First of all the sad stuff, they are made in China since about 8 years an no loger in the USA. But except from that they are a classic item you need to have. The design is mainly unchanged since 100 years now, if that doesn´t speaks a language. I was giving away two of them one to a friend and one to my sister and theyboth love them. With my friend, “where is Stanley” turned out to be a common phrase and I envied him for “Stanley”. My sister uses “Stanley” even as a part of self defense kit when walking home at night from work.

The main reason I did not by one, was that I already have a similar size steel one. But you have to understand that Stanleys have got a kind of a soul. With their look, their handle and the performance to burn your moth on the content even after 12 hours. So I´m a happy owner of one as well now. Welcome to the club! Try it out, give a good friend one as a present and see how long you last before you buy your own or beg him for a greenish  present with a handle.

Here a vintage one from the USA.

Bremerhaven – Harbour:
Visiting my sister in BremerhavenI had to see the harbour with it´s ships and shipyards. The peak time of the shipbuiling in Bremerhaven is long gone. With  incredible efficiency even the huge containerships are unloaded and reloaded within a day or two, so not too many sailors or hookers in town. But some remains of the glory times are still there and tried to be preserved.

Amazing what Brands our friends from Amtraq Distribution pesented at the Bread and Butter. Knowing some brands they distribute already, I was overwhelmed to see a lot of new companies there like: Golden Bear, Fidelity, Reds, Rancourt, Croots and not to forget Feinschmuck.

Just in front of the Berlin Tempelhof Airport there is the Platz der Luftbrücke with its monument. When we walked by to the Bread and Butter fair, I realized that the patina of the Berlin Feinschmuck Gürtel/belt goes quite well with it.
