Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob pipe
Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob pipe:
Grabbed this pipe on a recent trip to Italy. Not knowing that it is actually the famous Popeye pipe. But not only Popeye was one of it´s famous users, Norman Rockwell (Saturday Evening Post), Mark Twain and Frosty the Snowman and now me.
I was a bit puzzled when I read the “Meerschaum” reference on the bottom of the pipe but it is part of the name. The pipe (head) is made of a corn cob and wood.
Grown in Missouri soil and handcrafted for over 143 years in the same Washington, Missouri, building, Genuine Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob Pipes are an American Legend – making Missouri Meerschaum the world’s oldest, largest, and leading manufacturer of corn cob pipes. Since 1869, six generations of Missouri Meerschaum skilled craftsmen have believed there is no substitute for quality and excellence.

munich coat of arms belt – Münchner Stadtwappen Gürtel
Münchner Wappen Gürtel – Munich coat of arms belt – Münchner Kindl:
Yesterday Manfred from Feinschmuck gave me this belt buckle made after a 13th. century coat of arms (Stadtwappen / Stadtsiegel) from the city of Munich.
Can someone make out the full text on the buckle and figure out the meaning?
Below something from Wikipedia the full story here: Münchner Kindl.
The coat of arms of Munich (Münchner Wappen) depicts a young monk dressed in black holding a red book. It has existed in a similar form since the 13th century, though at certain points in its history it has not depicted the central figure of the monk at all. As the German name for Munich, i.e. München, means of Monks, the monk in this case is a self-explanatory symbol who represents the city of Munich. Appearing on a document of May 28, 1239, the oldest seal of Munich has a picture of a monk wearing an open hood. While all seal impressions show the monk with the book in one hand and three outstretched fingers in the other, the monk has varied slightly, appearing in profile, then later full-faced and bare-headed. By the 19th century the figure was portrayed as youthful and became known as the Münchner Kindl or Munich Child. The coat of arms in its current form was created in 1957 and is still an important symbol of the Bavarian state capital.
Otter Wax, waterproof your fabrics
Otter Wax, waterproof your fabric:
Thanks to Frederic for bringing my attention to Otter Wax. Waxing natural fibres to make them waterproof is not a total new invention, more a forgotten practise. Probably the only company who still does it until now on a large scale is Barbour. But actually you can waterproof your shoes, backpack, jeans or jacket with a bar of Otter Wax quite easily.
Available is Otter Wax via their webshop in the US and in Europe via Warenmagazijn.
Timber Trivets by Adam Goodrum
Timber Trivet by Adam Goodrum:
A fine example of functional design I came across in the museum shop at the Lousiana museum in Denmark. The timber trivets are used to protect the table from hot saucepans and dishes in a decorative way.
The design was made by Adam Goodrum and distributed by Normann Copenhagen.
Alan´s Pasta Workshop – Bregenz
Alan´s Pasta Workshop – Bregenz:
Recently we were on a saturday and around lunchtime in Bregenz – Austria. Sure lunch could not be delayed. Luckily we walked by Alan´s Nudelwerkstatt. There we had some superb fresh made ravioli with sage and dried tomatoes.
Alan Cohen from New York manufactures in Bregenz with two Italian pasta machines, filled and plain pasta. A quite and unique place with lots of character as the owner itself. Up to 8 persons can be hosted on 4 tables. His pasta is accompanied by a fine selection of Italian wines, olive oil, Cantuccini, Panettone and his home made Pesto.

Brooks leather saddles @ Copenhagen
Brooks leather saddles @ Copenhagen:
Brooks leather bicycle saddles are an investment for a lifetime. They will mold to the owners shape and are nearly indestructible, that is what makes them so popular. If you see them on a bike, they tell you that it´s owner got style and understood their true value . So I was really fascinated to see that in Copenhagen they were such a common view. With so many cycling “Freaks” in this city with a natural sense for good design and well made products, it made total sense.
I was drawn more and more to take images from the various types I saw on the streets. Their different colors, leather structure and worn patterns. Some people were really puzzled to figure out what image I took with my camera. See the result of just some of the images I took above, probably I will make a large printout as a collage.
Just found a great site devoted to the Copenhagen bicycle culture -> Copenhagenize
