Here some impressions from the just released Heritage Post Magazine No. 8 – 2014. Which I got hold of it on Monday at the Bread & Butter fair in Berlin. Now, after returning home, it´s time to give it a study. The weather it´s just perfect for a relaxed read today.
I arrived yesterday in Berlin, before heading to the Tempelhof I decided to use the time for the Christoph Schlingensief Exhibition at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin. The exhibition will be ended by 19th of January and will then be shown at the MoMA NYC, so now is the time to have a look at his works. The Church of Fear is located outside so I had the chance to already have a look before entering the exhibition. Already I can say, he died too young …
Recently I had the chance to have a closer look at the Passion France knife collection. A real nightmare to narrow down your first choice with so many options. Be prepared to buy at least one and leave with at least one (which you did not buy now) on your wish list.
So the one I choose was the “Poisson Culut Bu” which can be obtained here.
This Laguiole knife with a box wood handle (buchbaum) has the traditional salvia/sage shaped blade. I love the elegant, newer design of the Laguiole blades but I went for this knife for a more rugged looking one. The box wood looks a bit like ivory. After I bought it Wolfgang told me it´s a traditional sailors knife by its design. The steel plate at the end of the handle serves as a tobacco / pipe tamper, which is a nice feature. (however its a bit too big for my Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob pipe).
The leather sheat wasn´t an option for me at first look be-cause I think a knife should be able to withstand the abuse made by other contents in a trouser pocket. BUT if you see and touch this nicely leather sheats hand made in France – not buying it wasn´t an option anymore.

Glückspfennig Gürtel – Lucky Penny BeltThis time a real Glückspfennig belt. For the last one I made, I did not have a real “D-Mark”/ old german currency Pfennig in reach. But now I´m well stocked with pennies, about half a kilo of pennies are here and probably most birth years should be within it. Just ask if you want one made with your year of birth.
A family-run tannery in Devon is believed to be Britain’s only remaining traditional oak bark tannery still in production.
J & FJ Baker & Co Ltd is based in Colyton, Devon, and has been owned by Andrew Par’s family for 150 years – although a tannery is said to have existed in the area since Roman times. Here Mr Par outlines the process used to transform hides to leather.
Apparently the website is down so I hope the Tannery still exist until today.

be-cause / Feinschmuck leather workshop – Ulmia Ott workbench
For a long time I´ve been watching this vintage Ulmia Ott workbench in Manfreds Garage. When I saw the restoration project of a similar Ulmia workbench @ TopHatter I finally asked him how he liked the idea of “getting rid” of this workbench. Actually he needed more space be-cause of the just bought Feinschmuck Fiat 238. So we roughly cleaned the bench, let it dry for a day and moved it into my home yesterday. This is the workspace where Feinschmucks buckles are hand sewn and turn into a belt from now on.
It was just a matter of time with so many riding family members and that I had to do a Riders Belt – Reiter Gürtel. So that is what i came up with. A mouthpiece / snaffle bit belt best for slim belts of 25mm and a horseshoe belt with 38mm. Both buckles are UK made and massive brass casted. Hand sewn in saddle stitch on veg. tanned leather from a german tannery.
Actually my mother gave me the task to finally field test if a dishwasher damages the sharpness of a blade by giving me a kitchen knife with a broken plastic handle. But instead I took the hammer and got rid of the plastic crap and see if I could attach a new handle.
A while ago at my Schachenmayr Tannery visit I got a piece of Cowbell leather, extremely thick and real hard and durable. I cut out the rough shape for the handles out of this leather and riveted them on the handle with some solid copper rivets. Then I started to fine shape the leather by cutting more and more off. Not a stunning beauty but this knife was saved from the trash bin and probably (due to the leather handle) will no longer be but into the dishwasher.
The Süddeutsche Magazin writer Paul-Philipp Hanske made a comment on the end of his story “I used to sprinkle my cheeks as a youngster with the aftershave of my dad. Until his cousin explained to me that “Pino Silvestre” which is smelling like fir resin does not “score with the woman”.
Thats the smell I connect with my father and since years I use it to finish / round up the task of a straight razor shave. If the quote is right, I do not want to know how many sisters and brothers I might have got if he never used Pino Silvestre.
