Today in my favorite antique shop I came over 5 old – vintage hiking sticks with stick nails – stocknägel. I could not find the word for a stocknagel in english. To explain it, a stocknagel is a souvenir you nail on your walking or hiking stick from a place of interest – mostly in the mountains. Its a tradition in europe and also a collectable or souvinir of where you have been. Its also a motivation for kids to collect them and some go mad about getting their sticks full. By that they learn to enjoy hiking and climb mountains by play.

Ruitertassen leather briefcase

Original Ruitertassen leather briefcase.
I’ve been hunting for a used Ruitertassen briefcase for a long time. I guess it was because my mother bought me a similar bag for school. As a teenager I painted it badly and it was disposed sometime. New ones are about 200 Euros, decent ones on Ebay go for about 70 Euros max. The “big” ones are good for carrying close to 20 kg of books. The one I got has probably just about 1/3 of the with of the schoolbags. The shoulderstrap was missing but I wouldn’t have a use for it anyway. The craftsmanship of this bag is extraordinary, very thick leather and strong stitching. And it developed a wonderful patina over the years. It will serve as a notebook case eventually with no intention to vandalize it with graffiti.
Thorogood Moc Toe boots

Thorogood Moc Toe boots heritage 6 wedges model. (ID 814-4200).
First of all I was always concerned about boots with the white vibram sole, regarding the grip, look, comfort and the durability. So when I found a real cheap offer in the States for about 70 USD (50 Euro) I could not avoid to give them a try. I checked some reviews about the Thorogood heritage boots from Weinbrenner and ordered them.
A little after a week of wearing them I can say the following:
– it’s not a real Moc Toe as other manufactures do, the rim is just “folded” and not of 2 pieces of leather. Have a look at image 4.
– the leather is quite “soft”, so no real break in.
– they smells a bit of rubber not 100% leather and glue (this might come from the insole)
– my concerns about the white vibram were wrong, it’s extremely comfortable (did not try it on mud yet)
– on the right shoe, the first hook on the left is not in line to the other side (it might be the reason this pair was so cheap – could be B-Ware) speaking of about 5 mm.
– the shock sole might add to the comfort but I think of changing it to a leather one
– compared to the sizing of Red Wings I would say they are a little bit smaller and less wide (10,5 US – D)
So overall I’m quite happy, and I would say it’s a real bargain. If you are in the States or Canada or doing a trip over there, give them a try. I will post some Images in some month as
a reverence of how the break/wear in.

Lee Storm Rider denim jacket

This vintage Lee Storm Rider denim Jacket size 44 made it´s way from Canada to me, so I´m ready now for the winter now. It´s an all time classic and it took me a while to get a not too overpriced one. This one should be from the 60th/70th. What I found out is that the age can be dated by the label and the lining, so if some expert has a hint I would glad. A label in the right inside pocket has the number 9037318 if it helps. At first glance i thought the lining at the cuffs was damaged. But at a closer look, it is just the way they attached the lining jacket to the outer denim jacket.

Gillette Adjustable safety razor

Gillette Adjustable safety razor:
A vintage Gillette Adjustable safety razor. It´s a butterfly system razor. Which means you open the razor for the blade by turning the bottom of the handle and the wings will open for placing the razor blade. The cool thing about this razor is the adjustment ring which is labeled 1 -9 and by turning it you put more pressure on the blade and change the angle of it. So you can change the razor to be more aggressive or being more smooth. Good ones have all the chrome and the numbers are still black.
The razor even got famous 1964 in James Bond´s – Goldfinger, when he shaves in the plane and activates a tracking device.
Heuer 510 501 chrono watch with nato strap
Heuer 510 501 chrono watch with nato strap:
Given to me by my father around 20 years ago, about the time when I served at the army. I beat the cap out of it – damaged the original black metal band, never realized how expensive and actually nice this watch is. At this time, of course it had to have a camouflaged watchband which could be closed to avoid reflections from the watch glass. I was always a bit pissed off be-cause the chrono lost 5 minutes after a week.
This watch was for a long time forgotten in the basement, but worked fine with just some shakes and this after about 15 years of rest. I replaced the camouflaged strap with a bit more civil looking one. I know the glass should be replaced, but right now I think it add´s to it´s characteristic.
