Hiking St. Anton am Arlberg Region – Austria

From saturday till sunday we went to a hike to a  2395m high alpine hut which was on my absolute to see list since years. Bad weather or snow and bad maps were the reason I did not made it there yet. After a steady 5-6 hours wandering uphill we made it to the already warmed up cabin. 2 hiking couples moved already in and they even made too much pasta. We were generous enough to help them to recycle this well made dinner. In exchange we did the washing and I shared my last drops of Flor de Cana Rum with them.

This was also the first time I was just in time to feast on blueberries, they were always too green or too ripe. The mountains and the landscape in this area is great as well. On the way we passed some really rustic cabins for shelter and as hunting base as well.

I definitely have to head back there before winter comes for one or two nights.

From time to time you should meet with friends or a friend to spent a night under the sky, with some booze, a campfire and good stuff for the barbecue. Good friends bring good stuff and the best the best stuff. Starting with some excellent pear spirit called No1 we continued with a giant trout and a saibling. I was curious that it would get a real mess to eat the fish but it wasn´t and the taste of those two great fish were worth it. Enough to feed 4 guys, but we nearly made it and the rest were shared with our two 4 legged companions. The water level on the river rose so it wasn´t as crystal clear as some weeks before.

The de buyer egg pan proofed 100% to be a must have for outdoor camping but the feuerhand lantern is too leaky when not carried upright all the time. (Probably transporting it empty and just refilling it with the absolute must is the key). You will end up having petroleum perfume surrounding you.

Hank Butitta was very close to his master thesis for architecture and sick of theoretical stuff, so he bought a school bus and converted it to a mobile home. After the presentation was a full success, he decided to field test the interior by driving the bus for about 5000 miles trough the states. Great Project and Inspiration of the day/week.

We (one of my Sisters & Tillmann) did a camping trip to the river yesterday afternoon. Just about an hour walk and you got solitude hardly to match. Except some fishermen going fly fishing and others who had the same idea to spent some time outdoors. Great to see families taking their kids on a small adventure.

I just spent one day in the Alps and discovered another great hiking area with possible winter hike possibilities. The area around the Kaltenbergerhütte is not just surrounded by a great panoramic scenery but also the area to run free for easy more than 100 Haflinger horses.

This is one of the standart hikes we do when weather is bad or the snow is still trapped in the mountains. Not too high in altitude but in a nice surrounding – scenery. At the end of the valley there is the village Schönenbach which is only inhabited in summertime. Famous for their milk and cheese we do not fail to restock some local made stuff there.

Topodesigns Klettersack Navy/Leather

A special version of Topodesigns Klettersack with leather bottom and the lower sides. Very handy for placing the backpack on wet or rough ground. It keeps the rucksack dry and protects the Cordura (Not that 1000 Cordura needs too much protection, it´s already a tough material). The name Klettersack is earned by its functionality and solid construction. The weak spot of a Backpack is always the Zippers. As you can see Topo uses big and tough YKK ones. The lifetime of a Zipper defines the lifetime of your bag. They are hard to replace and if possible, it gets expensive. Avoid a backpack by all means with to small ones or those fancy watertight ones (they are crap).

The size of the backpack with 22 litres is just perfect for your daily use, a day in the mountains or other outdoor activities. With the straps and the additional ones available you will be able to increase the capacity to your needs. I got a serious faible for backpacks and I guess sooner or later my collection will be expanded by a Topo one. (and one with a broken/faulty zipper will get retired).

Hubertus Connoisseur pocket knife:
Another great addition to my knife collection. The Hubertus pocket knife has no special product name but I would name it Connoisseur or Gentleman knife. It got all the essencial tools to “survive”. A knife blade, a fork, a corkscrew and a cap opener. No need for a tin opener – who want´s to eat out of tin/cans, anyway. You can argue that “who needs a fork” (use the tip of the blade) or “who needs a cap opener” us the back of the blade but that is why it´s the gentleman knife. It got style, I hope its owners too. The locking mechanism of both parts is very clever and well/solid designed. By opening the fork you unlock both parts. Very nice in design, the brass parts look great with the steel and the black bakelit. There is are also antler or wooden versions of this knife. Thanks David for this nice gift – travel save! Check the Hubertus Solingen knife page.
