Otter Wax(ed) the Rising Sun Outdoor Vest

Yesterday I decided to try some Otter Wax to treat my brand new Rising Sun Outdoor Vest in Raw Brown Duck Canvas. It took me about half an hour and 1/3 of this XL bar of Otter Wax. I strongly recommend to watch the Otter Wax Video on Vimeo for some hints. Working the wax into the fabric with your fingers is the way to do it right. There is the option to treat the fresh waxed fabric with a blow dryer for a deeper saturation and a more even distribution. The wax gets more fluid then, but I liked the contrast of some hard to reach areas (see the image 2) and also the not too perfect applied look.

At the beginning of the treatment the wax is a bit sticky but this has changed already within the last 10 hours. As mentioned in the Video by Otter Wax it is settling in for up to 3 days. I hope the development and difference between the two vests is clear. To describe the waxed one, I would say it looks a bit like some “well broken in greasy suede leather vest”. I´m sure this vest will develop a nice character within the next month – stay updated here.

Thanks to Amtraq Distribution and Otter Wax Distribution Europe for the samples.

Rising Sun Outdoor Vest Brown Duck Canvas

Today I received a sample from Amtraq, the Rising Sun Outdoor Vest in raw brown Duck Canvas. A sold crafted piece of garment which is well suited for your daily use. I especially like the two huge “Chest kill pockets with a curved opening” (as Rising Sun describes them). To show the size of these I used my Stanley as a reference. Nearly it fits in – not when worn,  if you wear the vest tight. but I guarantee your home office will for sure got stored in them. For the sizing, I´m 187cm and for a slim fit a medium is perfect for me. If you plan to wear multi layers of garment beneath (eg. for autumn/winter) or for a serious outdoor use, then upsize.
If you can not wait for your own worn look to develop then this vest is also available in the “stocker wash”.

Here the detailed specs:

– Traditional 30’s sportsman detailing.
– 100% cotton, American made brown duck.
– Chest kill pocket with curved opening.
– Small chest utility pocket.
– Large 4 hole American made melamine buttons.
– Two roomy front bottom pockets.
– Back cinch for adjustable fit.
– Contrast twill internal pocket facing.

Pfitzauf form and altered recipe

Pfitzauf form and altered recipe

At one of my favorite drift shops, again I found something useful. An old clay form for a Swabian dessert called “Pfitzauf”. I guess I will give this traditional recipe a try sometime (never heard before). But my intentions were to put some sweet yeast dough, filled with plum jelly or other fruits and top it with a giant amount of brown butter, bread crumbs and caramelized sugar. The first try happened about 4 hours after I bought the form, be-cause I already had some dough for bread in the kitchen to rise, which i altered with milk, vanilla sugar and butter. They were ok for a first try but for sure I need even more butter (150g+)! Topped with lots of vanilla sauce could turn out to be an all time favorite.

On sunday, coffee run out. Or better the roasted coffee beans, so i lured my sister into turning the Whirley Pop for about 30 minutes. The outcome was better than I could have done it. However, I still found a few beans who got burned spots, which should be avoided and you can see it clearly on the least image. You also should cool the coffee beans down after they got the right roast – asap. For that I use the big bowl and to get rid of the bitter skin of the beans as well.

Red Wing 8128 Brogue Ranger brown Velva Retan leather

Last week I had the chance to finally see the Red Wing 8128 in the Jeanslife store in Winterthur. Roger got this model on stock since 3 weeks, quite about the same time when Red Wing Amsterdam released the info on their blog. I never liked the dark brown of the former and discontinued model and wished to have a more cognac leather. Like my Red Wing 9013 would have been perfect. The actual color of the Red Wing 8128 is hard to describe, it´s a more a  “grey brown”. Definitely a bit darker as on the Red Wing Amsterdam images.

When you search for Velva Retan Leather you find out that this leather was also used for the industrial Red Wing Syle 952 which tells you that it´s going to be a tough one.

Another info I found what exactly Velva Retan leather is, was this:
Pioneer: A brand of oil retan leather. Also known as Velva Retan. After the initial tanning, the leather is subjected to hot steam in a tanning drum and then shot with hot oil and waxes. The open pores absorb these chemicals until they are saturated. This leather is primarily for work boots.”

So what do we have now? The classic appearance of a brogue boot, made out of a though workboot leather and paired with the lightweight and hardwearing Nitril Cork sole. Sounds promising to me.

Ecke32 Manufacture Store Visit Konstanz

We did not visit Lars Nehren and his Manufacture Store Ecke32 for nearly a year, so it was great to see him again and the transformation/change of his store. Some brands have taken over others since then. The former, let´s call it the “peak performance” room is now for womens wear only, which goes very well with the stuff for the dudes. Lars Ecke32 made it quick to the shops you should see when you are in the south of Germany, the “Dreiländereck” (Lake Constance surrounded by Germany, Austria and Switzerland). Ahh and I should not forget to add, he is restocked with some Feinschmuck items now!

Brands quite evident there are: Momotaro, Filson, Tellason, Dehen 1920, Trickers, Red Wing, Schiesser Revival, Pike Brothers, Levis Vintage Clothing, Merz b. Schwanen, Gitta Plotnicki, Feinschmuck, Edwin, Wolverine, Nabholz, Nigel Cabourn, Canada Goose and Inis Meáin just to name a view. The full brand portfolio you can view here.

Some images of a former visit @ Ecke32 here.
